Passion or profit—what drives your deck-building contractor?

By Rosario Ungaro

Like everyone, I often get asked what I do for a living. I could say that I’m a builder that specializes in outdoor structures like decks, arbours, pergolas, and such. Or, I could say that I’m a carpenter with my own building company. But neither of these answers state what I really do. I make people’s lives better and I make a good living doing so. That’s the short version.

Fix it or nix it: should you repair or replace your deck?

By Rosario Ungaro

Just because your deck is having problems doesn’t mean that it has to be replaced. Sometimes your deck can be rejuvenated at a much lower cost. But, sometimes it can’t.

Dress your deck for success

By Rosario Ungaro

As a deck builder my job is done when the deck is built. Although we discuss the type of furniture the client is considering in the deck design process, I don’t often get to see the deck after it has been decked out with outdoor furniture and accessories.

Switching from cedar to a low-maintenance deck—a Toronto case study

By Rosario Ungaro

The original cedar deckFifteen years ago Pat and Bob decided to have a new deck built in their back yard. They looked forward to listening to the cardinals as they sipped their weekend morning coffee. They also looked forward to enjoying a barbecue as the plane trails above gave hints of people flying off to faraway places. The new deck was going to be great for their family’s enjoyment as well as for entertaining friends. In lots ways it lived up to what they expected. In some ways it did not.

Get more value from your deck or patio investment

By Rosario Ungaro

Let’s face it, Toronto can have challenging weather for the patio- and deck-enjoying enthusiast. We usually get to enjoy our patios and decks from May to September, and if we’re lucky, maybe a few days in March, April, and October. To make matters worse, in the precious few months we do have, many days can be rainy and others too hot to be sitting outside unprotected.

A word from Rosario…

Our Blog is about sharing some of what we have learned along the way. (Many contractors even call us for ideas or advice.) We hope it is informative and shows our commitment to continuous learning—something we do so we can bring the very latest and best to our customers.

You've probably heard the phrase:

"Some people have twenty-five years of experience. Others have one year of experience, twenty-five times over."

If a contractor doesn't stay up-to-date on the latest building codes, trends, styles, tools, materials, and products, they'll soon find themselves in the latter category. We work hard to make sure that we are not. We regularly talk with our suppliers, go to industry trade shows, and share information and ideas with our peers to make sure that we stay on top of our game and can continue to bring you the very best in building craftsmanship and knowledge.

I welcome the opportunity to chat with you about your next building project.

Regards,

Rosario Ungaro
